Advanced Notice of Election Meeting – August 2026
Pursuant to the Australian National University Act 1991, the ANU Governance Statute 2024, the Governance Rule 2023 and the Governance Order 2024, on 29 August 2024 the Deans and Heads of Research Schools met and elected Professor Juliana Ng as a member of ANU Council, commencing on 30 September 2024 for two years.
The Council term for Professor Juliana Ng will end on 29 September 2026. As such, an election will be held for one Dean or Head of Research School to serve a two-year term on the ANU Council.
Under the Governance Rule 2023 and the Governance Order 2024, an election will need to be conducted in a meeting of Deans and Heads of Research Schools. This meeting is proposed to be held in early September to align with the concurrent election for Academic members to Council.
Council service involves substantial commitment for members including reading and understanding complex papers, attending meetings and contributing meaningfully to discussions, and exercising independent judgment in making decisions. For internal elected members, this work is absorbed on top of existing duties including research output, teaching preparation, specialist and administrative work, and study outcomes.
In recognition of the important contribution internal elected members make to the Council, ANU Management, with the support of Council, will establish additional support for internal Council members which has not previously been offered. This is expected to include a centrally funded recognition and support package for internal elected members, enabling Schools, Colleges, Portfolios and Service Divisions to apply for funds to cover reasonable and appropriate activities as required, as well as an adjustment to an elected member’s performance expectations. More information on this support will be provided in due course as arrangements are finalised.
