He served at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN between 1994 and 1999, including during Indonesia's membership of the Security Council in 1996-1997.

Widely recognised for his leadership in regional diplomacy and multilateral engagement, he has played a key role in advancing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation and Indonesia’s global presence. His term as Director General for ASEAN Cooperation coincided with Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN, a period marked by intensive effort to promote the idea of an ASEAN Community which was formally endorsed by the member countries through the 2003 Bali Concord II.

He served as Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador to the United Kingdom and also to Ireland, and as Director General for ASEAN Cooperation.

As Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, he oversaw Indonesia’s emergence as a regional power with global responsibilities.

In November 2012, he was made Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In 2011, he also served as Chair of ASEAN.

In 2018, he served as a member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High Level Advisory Board on Mediation and the United Nations President of the General Assembly’s Team of External Advisors.

In 2023, Dr Natalegawa founded the Amity Circle, which brings together former foreign ministers and other high-level officials from countries across the Indo-Pacific, with the aim of promoting dialogue and supporting multilateralism.

In addition to his Doctor of Philosophy from The Australian National University, Dr Natalegawa completed a Master of Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
