The Chancellor appointment process is progressing well, and the application period has now closed.

The Panel has met on several occasions to consider the requirements of the role, including feedback gathered through the Chancellor survey conducted across the ANU community. The Panel has also reviewed the key attributes and capabilities sought in the next Chancellor, as well as a range of potential candidates.

A shortlist has now been established. These candidates will participate in both informal and formal discussions with the Chair and members of the Panel before the Panel undertakes its final deliberations.

Following completion of this process, the Panel will submit its recommendation to the ANU Council for their consideration.

Subject to the planned timeline, the appointment process is expected to be finalised by late August or early September 2026.

The University has given notice that it is commencing bargaining for a new Enterprise Agreement to replace the current Agreement.

As required under the Fair Work Act 2009, on 15 July 2026 the University issued the Notice of Employee Representational Rights (NERR) to staff who will be covered by the proposed Agreement.

Enterprise bargaining provides an opportunity for the University and employee representatives to negotiate the terms and conditions that will apply under the next Enterprise Agreement.

The University is committed to conducting bargaining in good faith and to engaging constructively with staff and employee representatives throughout the process.

There will also be opportunities for staff to provide feedback on matters relating to enterprise bargaining. Further information about these opportunities will be shared in the coming week.

In the meantime, staff are encouraged to submit any questions, feedback or suggestions to the enterprise bargaining team at enterprise.bargaining@anu.edu.au.

The new 80 Years Together website has launched, celebrating the University's rich history and the people, discoveries and milestones that have shaped the University over the past eight decades.

Help celebrate the University's 80th anniversary by volunteering at ANU Community Day, where we'll welcome the wider community to campus for a day of discovery and creativity. Staff volunteers are needed for roles including wayfinding, customer experience and event support. Volunteers will receive TOIL, food vouchers and ANU merchandise. ANU and Australia have lost one of their foremost experts on Russia with the passing of Kyle Wilson on 29 June, following a long illness. Wilson had been a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for European Studies since 2013, contributing to writing and debate on contemporary Russia, its politics and the war in Ukraine. He studied Russian language and literature at undergraduate and postgraduate level at the ANU followed by a distinguished career in government as a diplomat and intelligence analyst. Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is among those who have paid tribute to Wilson's knowledge, expertise and generosity of character.

A memorial gathering will be held at Old Parliament House (Members Dining Room at rear of building), Parliament Drive, Canberra Tuesday 28 July, 2pm. Those interested in attending can register here.

Dr Samira Nazar believes that recognising excellence is vital to celebrating outstanding contributions and strengthening the ANU community. She reflects on receiving the 2025 Vice-Chancellor Award for Educational Excellence, describing it as a profound honour and a reminder that meaningful change begins with people who are passionate about making a difference.

Coral Bell School alumnus Fe Fikran has returned to ANU to lead an Australia–Indonesia youth workshop on digital literacy and countering online radicalisation. He shares how his Master of International Law and Diplomacy prepared him to turn international law and diplomacy into practical regional security outcomes.

In a small lab tucked away in the University's School of Engineering, there is a machine that looks an unlikely hero.

A nationwide AusAlert test will take place on Monday 27 July, 2pm (AEST). Mobile phones, some smartwatches and tablets across Australia will sound a siren, vibrate and display an emergency alert message.

If you have a hidden or safety device as part of a domestic, family or sexual violence safety plan, consider taking precautions before the test, such as storing the device somewhere secure, leaving it with a trusted person, or turning it off and switching it back on when it is safe.
